Heartbreaking news for fans of the Los Angeles Clippers as Steve Ballmer, owner of the Clippers, shockingly announces the relocation of the LA Clippers to Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Clippers, in a surprising twist, relocate to Las Vegas under the new name: the “Las Vegas Spades.” This relocation brings the number of NBA teams in California to three. Analysts say the biggest reason behind the relocation of the Clippers was to get out of California and have their own spotlight as the only team in Nevada. Being in California put them in the shadow of two of the most popular teams in the NBA, the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Caden Caday, a sophomore at Valencia High School, shares his thoughts: “Even as a Lakers fan I’m pretty surprised that the Clippers relocated, although they weren’t my favorite team. I enjoyed the rivalry between the two teams and there definitely were some memorable moments from that team.”
Meanwhile Las Vegas is expecting increased tourism, new jobs and other economic benefits. The T-Mobile arena will become the new home for the Las Vegas Spades as the Intuit Dome will become the new home of the Los Angeles Lakers. Local businesses are already preparing for the influx of visitors in Las Vegas as transportation, and hotel prices are expected to increase immensely during games and playoffs.
As the Las Vegas Spades prepare to relocate next off-season, the team hopes to build their own unique identity. Moving away from LA will give them a huge opportunity to recollect themselves. However with the loss of many fans in LA it will take time to see if they will ever reach the same success and atmosphere they had during the famous Lob City era. Hopefully with a new name, new city, and new fans, the Clippers will finally win a ring… Happy April Fools!
