Downfall of Real Madrid?

Any football fan has realized that the past few years have been less than perfect for Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid. After winning a total of five trophies in the 2023/2024 season, they seemed to be untouchable. After losing key leaders such as Nacho Fernandez and Toni Kroos, Madrid looked to keep the squad strong with notable signings. Kylian Mbappe, arguably the best player of the past few years, joined the established team in the summer of 2024, sparking excitement and chaos for fans around the world.

While the first few matches looked promising with victory achieved in the UEFA Super Cup and Mbappe even scoring a goal, this performance was not carried into the rest of the year.

They suffered deafening losses to Spanish rivals Barcelona and also English powerhouses such as Liverpool. Not only were these huge blows to the club reputation and status, but they became cues that showed the world that Real Madrid has weaknesses to be exploited.

Having so many superstar players on one team in order to form the “Galacticos 2.0” has backfired as we’ve seen how the competing egos have led to the team’s poor performances.

I believe that there isn’t a cure to this problem but instead a longer journey that the squad must undergo in order to return to their glory days. Firing managers and signing new players will not immediately solve the issue but instead prolong this drought. It’s most important for the team to trust the process and grow as a unit. While players such as Vini Jr. and Mbappe are known to be the highlight performers on any team, it’s best for them to put their egos aside and accept that they have to share the spotlight with each other and the rest of the team.
