Will BLACKPINK’s newest comeback live up to their legacy?
BLACKPINK, a very popular K-pop girl group under YG Entertainment, released an album after every member, Rosé, Jennie, Jisoo, and Lisa, had grown separately within their solo careers with hit songs like “APT.” and “Like Jennie” to name a few. We have done a thorough music review of the album from three perspectives, all of which had differing levels of BLINK dedication!
BEFORE
Leann (a retired veteran): As someone who used to be into mainstream BLACKPINK during 2022, watching the members split into solo careers and recombine as a group in the recent months has been interesting. I believe that they peaked around the “Pink Venom” era, and their group dynamics have dampened over their separate careers, so I have somewhat low expectations but high hopes. With “Jump” starting their comeback journey, I noticed that their vocals and skills remained intact, but their choreography, charisma, and group synchronization were a little off, proving their stage presence is not as strong as it used to be before the group’s split. However, I am ready to see how all the members—Rosé, Jennie, Jisoo, and Lisa—will work together as BLACKPINK again. My biggest focuses are their vocal mix, stage presence during performances, and choreography execution, so I wish them luck!
Mahlani (a rookie cadet): With relatively new experience in the K-pop industry and having been diving into different fandoms and different artists, I can say that I am relatively excited for the upcoming BLACKPINKmini-album. I have listened to their past projects as well as their individuals, and loved both the different aesthetics and genres of music they have released. I have watched their previous performances prior to ‘Jump’, and I noticed that the on-stage charisma and chemistry are different in a way. I am curious to see if their separate styles will come together in the songs, or if they will create a sort of mashup/mixture of their own personal styles.
Kaia (a serving veteran): As a BLACKPINK fan and a person who has been to one of their concerts, I would say I am hyped for their new mini-album. I have pretty high expectations for it, as I have listened to pretty much all their songs and am familiar with their style. Although they have been on a three-year hiatus to work on some of their solo projects, I am a little scared they may not be as enhanced or quality-sounding as a group as they used to, or if it might sound either similar or different. But after listening to “JUMP,” it sounds promising for the other songs to come, and it has proved that they still have their iconic catchiness and charm to light up their audience with a new EDM/club music sound. It will be interesting to see how their new songs will sound and how the group sounds collectively, as it has been a while. It’s safe to say that I think they will make a good comeback, and I have high hopes for it.
BLACKPINK dropped the “Go” music video, along with the rest of the Deadline album, following “Jump” on February 27, 2026. This included “Go”, “Me and My”, “Champion”, and “Fxxxboy” which is, WARNING, explicit. It was largely perceived as positive by fans, as they enjoyed new music after BLACKPINK’s long unspoken hiatus.
AFTER
Leann: Overall, I was pleasantly surprised! Overall, I could definitely see how BLACKPINK has evolved within their music. Before, they were definitely the definition of K-pop with the neon colors and loud choruses, but with Deadline, BLACKPINK has definitely explored new genres. “Go” was more techno pop, and though it wasn't my cup of tea, I loved how they are growing as artists. My favorite parts were how the song was very vocal-focused and the raps from Lisa and Jennie, which were AMAZING. “Me and My” was a little more my style music taste-wise and gave a very “confident girl”-esce pop. There were cute references to some of the members’ solo signatures, such as Lisa's lalala during her rap, a direct reference to one of her solo songs, “LaLisa”. “Champion” is hands down my favorite, but it made me realize how much the western industry has influenced their music as the song is fully in English, a phenomenon that only occurred when K-pop began to appeal to the western audience. And finally, “Fxxxboy” is an acoustic song, close to the sound of Rosé’s solo career. It’s more mellow, which makes the swearing a bit surprising, but the song is soothing enough with the beautiful instrumental mixing with each of the girls’ stunning vocals. This was a wonderful way for BLACKPINK to return to the spotlight!
Mahlani: After my first listen, some of the songs, like “Fxxxboy,” were more towards my preferred genre of music, and I tended to lean towards those songs more. But overall, I have to say that the album did not disappoint at all, DEADLINE is an amazing comeback. Since it was one of my first times actually watching the Spotify countdown for a K-pop group, since ENHYPEN in January for SIN: THE VANISH, the album drop was more anticipated. I admire that BLACKPINK was able to slightly influence the songs individually by each of the members as well as their own styles, giving light to the different roles that the members play. I also appreciated how the songs were of longer lengths compared to other songs that other groups have recently released. “Go” had a more unique production, but the bridge was what caught my attention; it had a very catchy and ethereal sort of sound. From the get-go, I could tell that the album would have more of a Western influence to the sounds as well as production. The song “Me and my” immediately stood out to me as sort of a hype up song that you would listen to while riding in the car with your friends with the windows rolled down. I loved how the rap duo had their own comeback in the majority of the song, but wish that Jisoo could have been included more. “Champion” also stood out to me as a song very much influenced by Western culture in both the production and the lyrics. I think that it is a very modern type of song, even including collaborator EJAE from K-pop Demon Hunters, which helped the beat and music flow with the lyrics in a very catchy way. Last but not least, “Fxxxboy” has got to be my favorite song on the album currently, as I am heavily biased towards the more moody, ballads-like songs, which is how I got into Rosé’s music. Overall, the album was a success in my opinion; it had a mix of all the members’ individual strengths, as well as a mix of their voices and production sounds. I just wish that Jisoo had more lines and parts.
Kaia: I will say this album definitely surprised me. It was interesting to hear how each of them sounded as they have been on their own for a while, but still managed to blend their voices together as one, and ended up sounding great. I was pleased by the music development, specifically with the song “Go” and it’s probably my favorite out of the 4 new songs that came out, not including “Jump”. I appreciated Jennie’s and Lisa’s rapping parts as well and I feel like out of all the others, they flowed together as a group in this song the most. Although it took some getting used to and the EDM beats on that song felt very bold and loud compared to their voices, I like the change and am all for where they are going as a group. The more I listen to these songs, the more they have grown on me. I find that “Champion” has been stuck in my head the most so far when I first listened to it as it has a catchy chorus and concert-hype vibe. As it was produced by EJAE, who sang “Golden” from KPDH, that caught my attention and I’m definitely seeing the similar tone it has compared to it, so I’m thinking it might be the most popular one. For “Me and my”, its vocals were carried by Lisa and Jennie mainly but I liked the upbeat mood and lyrics. “Fxxxboy” wasn’t totally my style of song, but it was a Rose song that I feel like belonged to her album Rosie, and her vocals were pretty strong. Overall, I like how each song brought out each member’s style with Lisa and Jennie’s rapping, and Rose’s acoustic vocals, although I wish there was a little more of Jisoo in every song or a chance for her to shine because I feel like she was just in the background for most of them, but her vocals were good too. I liked how each song highlighted some aspects of every member with the album’s bold lyrics and shift in music style. I’d say they made quite the comeback.
Though our opinions are different and varying, we hope you take BLACKPINK’s new album, Deadline, a listen and see for yourself because we think it’s worth a listen!
